New project to build a blueprint for building decarbonisation

A new era in building decarbonization is dawning with the initiation of the META-BUILD project, supported by the EU`s Horizon programme. This ambitious endeavor aims to electrify and retrofit six buildings across different European countries-Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain-as a pioneering move towards establishing a blueprint for sustainable heating solutions.

META-BUILD brings together a consortium of 39 partners from 13 European countries, uniting expertise in renewable technologies, including the design of Heat Pumps, photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) systems, and second-life batteries. This collaborative effort seeks to drive technological advancements and foster sustainable practices across the continent.

The selected buildings will undergo a transformation with the integration of cutting-edge technologies, including Heat Pumps, PVT systems, and second-life batteries. Utilizing the latest innovations, 3D models of these structures will be generated and monitored through AI to optimize efficiency, setting a new benchmark for sustainable heating practices.

Upon successful validation, the proven model developed for the initial six buildings will be replicated in seven additional pilot projects across Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland, and Spain. This strategic expansion aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable heating technologies in the broader market.

META-BUILD doesn't stop at technology implementation. The project aims to translate its findings into actionable policies, including the development of blueprints and policy recommendations. This aligns with the broader goals of the European Commission's strategy for climate neutrality by 2050, particularly focusing on reducing emissions from buildings.

The project holds the promise of transforming the European building landscape towards a decarbonized and sustainable energy system. This project is set to run for four years, having had its kickoff meeting in Athens, Greece, on 30-31 January.
